Americans take 4.7 billion trips a year on buses. Public bus systems are hemorrhaging riders in recent years due to slow speeds when compared with ridesharing services and other alternative options. Transportation is now also the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.

Francis AI is the solution to traffic enforcement, and eco-sustainability in the bus lane. Our aim is to quickly expand beyond bus lane enforcement and curbside management into other areas such as school bus stop-arms violations, blocking intersections, pedestrian crosswalks, bike lanes, parking, double parking, parking in front of fire hydrants, and so on.

To show you how our platform works, we have chosen to demonstrate a bus lane violation. In real time, our device detects objects in the environment such as vehicles, lane lines, and even license plates, while its Location Engine tracks our camera’s position with centimeter accuracy. When an event is detected, it uploads a video clip to our smart cloud.

In the cloud, our knowledge engine consists of semantic and geometric maps like this. To build the geometric map, we track salient visual points in the environment. To annotate the geometric maps, we segment the scene at a pixel-level and cross-register it against our 3D maps. Finally, our Inference Engine combines the data to reconstruct the scene in 3D.

Compared to the fixed function devices of our competitors, our solution understands context and can reason in 3D that enables us to not only detect the violation but also understand the severity and causation. We can add rules to our Reasoning Engine to fully automate the detection of any kind of traffic violation, eliminating the need for human review, and leapfrogging the competition by a factor of 10x.
